Yellow Submarine, Apple PCS 7070.

Yellow Submarine, Apple PCS 7070, January 17, 1969, stereo. Album have front laminated flipback sleeve. Covers were manufactured by Garrod and Lofthouse. The stereo covers have PCS 7070 and Stereo in the upper right corner and red lines above and below rear sleevenote. The initial stereo covers have no information on the flaps. Later stereo sleeves have “Printed and made by Garrod & Lofthouse Ltd. Patent No. 943,895” on the lower flap. The records were housed in black inner sleeves with a die-cut circular opening on one side to expose the Apple label. These sleeves were most likely manufactured by Harrison & Sons.

1. First pressing, January 17, 1969. Dark green label with an image of an apple on side 1 and sliced apple on side 2. Label have “An E.M.I. Recording” text on two lines and “Sold In U.K. subject to resale price conditions, see price lists” text. Publishing year printed with small copyright symbol (p). Matrix numbers: Side 1: YEX 715-1; Side 2: YEX 716-1.

Some copies have a dots in the matrix numbers (YEX.715 / YEX.716)

2. Second pressing, between spring 1969 – September 1970. Dark green label with “An E.M.I. Recording” text on two lines. Publishing year printed with small copyright symbol (p) and small 33 1/3. Front laminated flipback sleeve. Covers were manufactured by Garrod and Lofthouse with PCS 7070 and Stereo in the upper right corner and red lines above and below rear sleevenote. Sleeves have “Printed and made by Garrod & Lofthouse Ltd. Patent No. 943,895” on the lower flap. The records were housed in white paper Apple inner sleeves. Matrix numbers: Side 1: YEX 715-1 (or -2, late -3); Side 2: YEX 716-1.

5. Fifth pressing, 1981 – 1984. Green-yellow label with “An E.M.I. Recording” text on two lines. Publishing year printed with big copyright symbol (P). Unlaminated sleeve. Covers were manufactured by Garrod and Lofthouse. The records were housed in standard white paper inner sleeves. Matrix numbers: Side 1: YEX 715-5 (or -6, possible -7), Side 2: YEX 716-2 (possible -3).

6. Sixth pressing, 1984 – 1991. Green-yellow label with “An E.M.I. Recording” text on two lines. The rimtext reached all the way around the labels. Importantly, around the 5 o’clock position in the rimtext the wording is: “UNAUTHORISED COPYING, HIRING, RENTING, PUBLIC PERFORMANCE AND BROADCASTING”. Unlaminated sleeve. The records were housed in standard white paper inner sleeves. Matrix numbers: Side 1: YEX 715-7, Side 2: YEX 716-3.

7. Seventh pressing, 90s. Yellow label with “An E.M.I. Recording” text on two lines. The rimtext also now doesn’t run all the way around the edge of the label. “ALL RIGHTS OF THE PRODUCER” printed at the start perimeter print. Importantly, around the 6 o’clock position in the rimtext the wording is: “UNAUTHORISED COPYIN, HIRING, RENTING, PUBLIC PERFORMANCE AND BROADCASTING”. Unlaminated sleeve with barcode on the back side. The records were housed in standard white paper inner sleeves. Matrix numbers: Side 1: YEX 715-8-1-1, Side 2: YEX 716-5C-1-1.

8. Egthth pressing, Remastered, Apple 94638246718, released November 12, 2012. The album was reissued on 180g vinyl, prepared use the full 24-bit versions taken from the 2009 remasters. Album included in “The Beatles” stereo box, as well as sold separately. Cover is replicat from the original Garrod & Lofthouse Ltd. sleeve without flaps. Vinyl pressed by Optimal Media GmbH, Germany.

Abbey Road, PCS 7088.

Abbey Road, PCS 7088, stereo, September 26, 1969. Album have full laminated cover without flaps on the back side. Covers were printed by Garrod & Lofthouse. The famous cover cover design done photographer Iain Macmillan. The initial covers have the green Apple logo out of alignment with the text and shifted to the left. The first version of the cover has a green tint.

Later covers corrected this error and have the Apple logo aligned with the text.

Possible both cover varieties have been produced at a similar date. The record were housed in black inner sleeves with a die-cut circular opening on one side to expose the Apple label.

1. First pressing, September 26, 1969. Dark green label with an image of an apple on side 1 and sliced apple on side 2. First label variation have “An E.M.I. Recording” text on two lines and small “33 1/3” text moved to the left side. Publishing year printed with small copyright symbol (p). The label does not have Her Majesty credit on the side 2. The labels are quite dark although the actual shade of green varies greatly among copies. Matrix number: Side 1: YEX 749-2; Side 2: YEX 750-1.

Variation B. This label has what is normally the second line printed as the bottom line. Thus, “33 1/3” is the bottom line on the left side and the catalog number PCS 7088 is bottom line on the right side. This unique Side 2 variation. Matrix numbers: Side 1: YEX 749-2; Side 2: YEX 750-1.

4. Fourth pressing, 1971 – 1973 (posible until 1976). Light green label with “An E.M.I. Recording” text on two lines. Publishing year printed with big copyright symbol (P). The main differences labels of the early editions from the later editions: title of the album increasingly moved to the center of the labels on the later editions and changes label color to a yellow.

Let It Be, Apple PXS 1 & PCS 7096.

Let It Be, Apple PXS 1, Box Set, stereo, May 8, 1970. The components of the Let It Be box set: outer slipcase with exposed inner tray to hold book; album cover and vinyl disc catalog number PCS 7096; standard white paper EMI inner sleeve (patent #1125555 Made In England); “Get Back” book. The same Ethan Russell color photos of faces of John, Paul, George and Ringo appearing on the slipcase, record sleeve and book. The back side of the slipcase is black. Text “Designed by John Kosh. Photographs by Ethan A Russell. Printed and made in Great Britain by Garrod & Lofthouse Limited (Patents Panding)” appear in white on the bottom.

The books were printed by Garrod & Lofthouse before the publishing credits were known. The printing on the credit page to these books starts with “Designed by John Kosh” and ends with “by Apple Publishing.” These books can be found three different ways. One variant has a white sticker with the publishing information applied below the printed information. The book starts with a blank white page. Second variant also has a white sticker with the publishing information applied below the printed information, but the book starts with a blank black page. Third variant has a translucent sheet with the publishing information that overlays the credit page so that the printed information can be read. The book starts with a blank black page. The later books have the publishing information printed on the credit page. There are two variations, starts with a blank white page or starts with a blank black page.

The full laminated cover were printed by Garrod & Lofthouse. The back cover also a black background. The text quoted at the beginning of this chapter, along with the song titles, appears in white above photos of each Beatle. The group’s name, album title and catalog number “Apple Pecords PCS 7096” appear in white on the spine. The first covers have a red Apple logo on the back. These covers were used for the deluxe box package as well as the initial batch of albuma issued without the box and book.

Some copies of the first covers has small white sticker with PXS. 1 in red and “WITH COMPLIMENTS” above catalog number, and with EMI logo below.

Some boxes include advertising poster of the Apple Records.

Later covers have a green Apple logo on the back.

Hey Jude, Apple CPCS 106.

Hey Jude, Apple CPCS 106, February 1970, stereo. The Hey Jude! album was prepared by Apple for release in USA on February 26, 1970. The LP contains songs not previously available on Capital albums. Although not released in U.K. issued Hey Jude! as an export LP, assigning it catalog number CPCS 106. The album received much broader distribution that the previous American export LPs. It was available to nearly all EMI affiliates throughout the world except for the U.K. and Ireland. Some U.K. stores imported the album from foreign countries. The Hey Jude! album was finally released in U.K. as Parlophone PCS 7184 on May 11, 1979. The full laminated cover were printed by Garrod & Lofthouse. The record were housed in standard white paper EMI inner sleeve (patent #1125555 “Made In England”).

1. First pressing, February, 1970. Dark green label with an image of an apple on side 1 and sliced apple on side 2. Lavel have “An E.M.I. Recording” text on two lines and small “33 1/3″. Publishing year printed with small copyright symbol (p). Matrix numbers: Side 1: YEEX 150-1; Side 2: YEEX 151-1.

Variation A. The early records have labels with the song Paperback Writer erroneously printed as three words (Paper Back Writer) and the song Revolution erroneously printed as Revolutions.

Variation B. On the later labels were corrected the title song as Revolution.

2. Second pressing, 1971 – 1973. Light green label with “An E.M.I. Recording” text on two lines and small 33 1/3. Publishing year printed with big copyright symbol (P). On the second issue Paperback Writer correctly shown as two words. The full laminated cover were printed by Garrod & Lofthouse. The records were housed in standard white paper EMI inner sleeves. Matrix numbers: Side 1: YEEX 150-1; Side 2: YEEX 151-1.
