The Beatles 1, Apple 7243 529325 1 1.

Published March 21st, 2020

First pressing, released November 13, 2000. Surprising though it may seem, when “1” was released it was the first single-album compilation of Beatles hits since “20 Greatest Hits” 18 years earlier. The idea was simple, a collection of all The Beatles’ No.1 hits in the UK and US. Although the majority of their singles topped the charts in both countries, the first and last tracks on the compilation illustrated how this was not always the case. The songs on 1 were remastered specifically for the release in 2000. The remastering was overseen by Peter Mew of Abbey Road Studios and took place there.

The first pressing has a gatefold sleeve with Apple logo on back side and date 2000, and with credits: “Beatles”, “Apple” and the Apple logos are trademarks of Apple Corps. Ltd”.

Love, Apple 094637 98081 1.

Published March 19th, 2020

First pressing, released  April 30, 2007. After being asked by the remaining Beatles, Ringo and Paul, along with Yoko Ono Lennon and Olivia Harrison, to make experimental mixes from their master tapes for a collaboration with Cirque du Soleil, Sir George Martin and his son Giles Martin worked with the entire archive of Beatles recordings to create LOVE. The idea for using the Beatles’ music in a Cirque du Soleil production had originally come from Harrison, who died in November 2001, through his friendship with the company’s founder, Guy Laliberté. The result is an unprecedented approach to the music. Using the master tapes at Abbey Road Studios, Sir George and Giles created a unique soundscape. On Air – Live At The BBC Volume 2, Apple 602537505067.

Published March 18th, 2020

Released November 8, 2013. Nearly 20 years after the first Live at the BBC album, The Beatles are back with another collection of material recorded live for radio broadcast by the British Broadcasting Corporation.
On Air – Live At The BBC Volume 2 contains 40 musical performances, 37 of them never before issued by the BBC, EMI, Apple or Capitol (the first volume had 56 songs, 30 of them previously unreleased). Between the songs are 19 short clips of banter among the boys. These interpolations give you an experience very much like the one you would have had listening to the programs on the radio. You are a witness to the birth of British Beatlemania.
Buddy Holly’s “Words of Love” sounds quite different without the lush reverb applied to Lennon and McCartney’s vocals on the album version. George Harrison barrels through “Do You Want to Know a Secret?” at a faster clip than usual. “Please Please Me” and “Chains” both lack Lennon’s trademark harmonica licks. “And I Love Her” has a heavier feel, with Harrison playing electric lead instead of the more delicate album track’s acoustic.
Paul McCartney rock out on “Beautiful Dreamer” and Lennon take the lead on Chuck Berry’s “I’m Talking About You.” Of the non-album tracks that make repeat appearances, “The Hippy Hippy Shake” is tighter and harder-rocking than the version selected for volume one. One of the very best alternate versions is of Ray Charles’ “I Got a Woman.” The whole feel of this version is different than the one on the ’94 album.
On Air – Live at the BBC Volume 2 offers another chance to revel in the greatness of the early Beatles.
