Published March 23rd, 2020

Released October 28, 1996. The Anthology 3 ranges May 1968 to 1970. In the collection there’s a high proportion of material that had never appeared before in any context; of the 50 tracks, only 17 had even appeared on bootlegs. Highlights include demos recorded by the all four Beatles at George Harrison’s home at Esher, an alternative “Get Back” recorded on the roof of the Apple offices, George’s own accoustic demos of songs including “Something” and “My Guitar Gently Weeps” and part of the legendary 12-minute “Helter Skelter” jam, though in had to be cut down to under five. Candid moments are capture from the Let It Be sessions when The Beatles decided to record everything without overdubs and such like.

The Beatles Anthology 2, Apple PCSP 728 (7243 8 34448 1 6).

Released March 18, 1996. The first track of Anthology 2″Reel Love” is a new Beatles item adding Paul, George and Ringo to previously unheard John Lennon tape. After that the set ranges from the beginning of 1965 throuth to February 1968, and again tells The Beatles’ story chronologically with alternative takes, outtakes and so on. There are also a number of new mixes created from basic takes that in some ways get away from archival “autenticity” that was the core of the project. Highlights include four live tracks recorded for a summer TV show broadcast from Blackpool, some amazing demo and alternate material of “Strawberry Fields Forever”, a very psychedelic version of “And You Bird Can Sing” and the first take of “Tomorrow Never Knows” that is quite different to the track on Revolver.

The Beatles Anthology 1, Apple PCSP 727 (7243 8 34445 1 9).

Published March 21st, 2020

Released November 21, 1995. Anthology 1 was hailed as the first official bootleg, conteining as it did withing its 55 songs, 33 that had already appeared on bootlegs over the years. But the overall package is far richer that any one bootleg. It includes unreleased version of songs from EMI, Polydor and Decca archives, live material from radio and TV broadcasts and interview snippets that draw an intimate perspective on the material. Particularly inportant tracks include demos by the Quarrymen, some home taping by John, Paul, George and Stuart Sutcliffe, five songs from their Decca audition including two previosly unheard Lennon/McCartney originls, and an early version of “Love Me Do” with Pete Best on drums. There’s also some live material from Sweden that proves John Lennon’s assertion that when it came to straight rock’n’roll, there was nobody around to bean them. In addition, there are lots of studio stops and starts interspersed with snatches of conversation that cast a candid spotlight on The Beatles in their first amazing flush of creativity.
