Revolver, Parlophone, PCS 7009.

Published July 16th, 2011

Revolver, Parlophone, PCS 7009, August 5, 1966, stereo. Garrod & Lofthouse Ltd. or Ernest J.Day & Co. front laminated flipback cover with small “stereo” on the front and with “Dr. Robert” (early variation) or “Doctor Robert” song credit on the back side.

1.First pressing. August 5, 1966. Black label with yellow logo and silver print. “The Gramophone Co. Ltd” printed at the start perimeter print and “Sold in U.K.” text. Plain white or white & black “LP advertising” inner sleeve. With or without KT tax code on the label. Matrix numbers: Side 1: YEX 605-1; Side 2: YEX 606-1.

Variation A. This is how the labels first appeared on the shelves. Still using the sans serif Arial typeset. Also, these early labels misprint the side 2 track Doctor Robert as “Dr. Robert”. These early Sans-serif labels have each song title starting on a new line with the first line purely for “Taxman” and have “Eleanor Rigby” starting on the second line down. Also something to note on these original labels is that each song title was followed by song credits and then lead vocalist. Label with extra dot in “IN.U.K.” on the side 1.

Variation B. As variation A, but the “Dr. Robert” error on side 2 has been corrected, now correctly reading “Doctor Robert”. This probably occurred within a short time after the LP was first released.

2. Second pressing, 1967 until 1969. This variation incorporates the corrected “Doctor Robert” spelling to the Sans-serif label. This label exhibits a new layout design most notably with side one having both “Taxman” and “Eleanor Rigby” on the first line. The credits pattern of “Song (Composer)-Lead Singer” has also now switched to “Song-Lead Singer (Composer)”. Matrix numbers: Side 1: YEX 605-1; Side 2: YEX 606-1. This probably appeared in late 1967 or 1968. This version has a label with an misprint, an extra dot in “IN.U.K.” on the side 1.

3. Third pressing, summer 1969 until November 1969. Garrod & Lofthouse Ltd. front laminated cover, with small “stereo“ on front. Black label with yellow logo and silver print. “The Gramophone Co. Ltd” printed at the start perimeter print. Sepia “LP advertising“ inner sleeve. Without tax code. Matrix numbers: Side 1: YEX 605-1; Side 2: YEX 606-1.

4. Fourth pressing, November 1969 until 1970. Black label with one black-white EMI logo and silver print. “The Gramophone Co Ltd” printed at the start perimeter print and “Made In GT. Britain” lower text. Laminated flipback “Garrod & Lofthouse Ltd” sleeve. Sepia “LP advertising” inner sleeve. Matrix numbers: Side 1: YEX 605-1; Side 2: YEX 606-1. It should be added, that the labels for this edition have a misprint. On the Side 2, Instead of “Got To Get You Into My Life” was printed “I Got To Get You Into My Life”.

5. Fifth pressing, early 1971 until 1973. Black label with two white-black EMI logos and silver print. “The Gramophone Co Ltd” printed at the start perimeter print and “Made In GT. Britain” lower text. Laminated flipback “Garrod & Lofthouse Ltd” sleeve with or without small “stereo“ on the front side. Sepia color “LP advertising” inner sleeve. Matrix numbers: Side 1: YEX 605-1 (or 2); Side 2: YEX 606-2.

6. Sixth pressing, summer 1976 until October 1980. Black label with two white-black EMI logos and silver print. “EMI Records Ltd” printed at the start perimeter print and “Made In GT. Britain” printed at the end of the perimeter print. Laminated “Garrod & Lofthouse Ltd” sleeve small “stereo“ on the front side. White paper EMI custom inner sleeve. Matrix numbers: Side 1: YEX 605-3; Side 2: YEX 606-3 (or -4).

“Columbia” pressing. This pressing is found in two variations. The first variation has the Columbia logo on the side 1 and Parlophone logo on the side 2. The second variation has Parlophone logo on the side 1 and a Columbia logo on side 2. For some reason there is such design is not known. Most likely this printing error.

7. Seventh pressing, October 1980 until April 1984. Black label with two white-black EMI logos and silver print. “ALL RIGHTS OF THE PRODUCER” printed at the start perimeter print. Importantly, around the 11 o’clock position in the rimtext the wording is: “UNAUTHORISED PUBLIC PERFORMANCE, BROADCASTING, COPYING AND HIRING”. Instead, added “MANUFACTURED IN THE UK BY EMI RECORDS LIMITED” text at the end of the perimeter print. Unlaminated sleeve with small “stereo“ on the front side. White paper EMI standard inner sleeve. Matrix numbers: Side 1: YEX 605-3 (or -4); Side 2: YEX 606-4.

Mispressing. The Side 2 has the MONO matrix: XEX 606-3. Side 1 plays stereo, side 2 is mono.

8. Eighth pressing, end of spring 1984 until 1987. Black label with two white-black EMI logos and silver print. “ALL RIGHTS OF THE PRODUCER” printed at the start perimeter print. Importantly, around the 11 o’clock position in the rimtext the wording is: “UNAUTHORISED COPYIN, HIRING, RENTING, PUBLIC PERFORMANCE AND BROADCASTING”.MANUFACTURED IN THE UK BY EMI RECORDS LIMITED” text at the end of the perimeter print. Unlaminated sleeve with small “stereo“ on the front side. White paper EMI standard inner sleeve. Matrix numbers: Side 1: YEX 605-5-1-2; Side 2: YEX 606-4.

9. Ninth pressing, 1987 – 1991. Black label with two silver EMI logos and silver print. “ALL RIGHTS OF THE PRODUCER” printed at the start perimeter print. Importantly, around the 11 o’clock position in the rimtext the wording is: “UNAUTHORISED COPYING, PUBLIC PERFORMANCE, BROADCASTING, HIRING AND RENTAL”. “MADE IN ENGLAND” text at the end of the perimeter print. Unlaminated outer sleeve with small “stereo“ on the front and with barcode on the back side. Sleeves early 90s have Apple logo on the back side. Matrix numbers: Side 1: YEX 605-6-1-; Side 2: YEX 606-7-1-.

10. Tenth pressing, Remastered, Parlophone 94638241713, released November 12, 2012. The album was reissued on 180g vinyl, prepared use the full 24-bit versions taken from the 2009 remasters. A Collection Of Beatles Oldies, Parlophone, PCS 7016.

Published July 16th, 2011

A Collection Of Beatles Oldies, Parlophone, PCS 7016, December 10, 1966, stereo. Garrod & Lofthouse Ltd. or Ernest J.Day & Co. front laminated flipback cover with or without small “stereo” on the front side.

1. First pressing. December 10, 1966. Black label with yellow logo and silver print. “The Gramophone Co. Ltd” printed at the start perimeter print and “Sold in U.K.” text. Plain white or white & black “LP advertising” inner sleeve. With or without KT tax code on the label. Matrix numbers: Side 1: YEX 619-1G; Side 2: YEX 620-1G.

“Oldies but Goldies” came out as Parlophone were producing their Times New Roman typeset runs and most early copies appeared on this label design.

2. Second pressing, 1967 until 1969.

Variation A. In begin 1967 Parlophone had seemingly gone back again to using the Sans-serif typeset exclusively on their labels. There is also small STEREO and added dates underneath the catalogue number on the right hand side.

(computer graphics)

Variation B-1. This label hints at the slightly different style probably dates  1968. The addition of a period mark after the “PCS.” of the catalogue number on both sides of the label is an obvious difference, but there is also the removal of credits underneath the catalogue number on the right hand side. “STEREO” over ON on the both sides. Another minor difference is a change in the use of period marks in the tracklistings. This version has a label with an misprint, an extra dot in “IN.U.K.” on the side 1, dot added to PCS.

Variation B-2. This variant is close to variant B-1 and dates end 1968. “STEREO” over NE on the both sides. This version has a label with an misprint, an extra dot in “IN.U.K.” on the side 1, dot added to PCS. The vertical spacing of the tracklisting seems to place this label sometime around 1968.

3. Third pressing, summer 1969 until November 1969. Garrod & Lofthouse Ltd. front laminated cover, with or without small “stereo” on front. Black label with yellow logo and silver print. “The Gramophone Co. Ltd” printed at the start perimeter print. Sepia “LP advertising“ inner sleeve. Dot added to PCS. Without tax code. Matrix numbers: Side 1: YEX 619-1G; Side 2: YEX 620-1G.

4. Fourth pressing, November 1969 until 1970. Black label with one black-white EMI logo and silver print. “The Gramophone Co Ltd” printed at the start perimeter print and “Made In GT. Britain” lower text. Laminated flipback “Garrod & Lofthouse Ltd” sleeve. Sepia  “LP advertising” inner sleeve. Matrix numbers: Side 1: YEX 619-1G; Side 2: YEX 620-1G.

Matrix numbers: Side 1: YEX 619-1G; Side 2: YEX 620-1G.

Matrix numbers: Side 1: YEX 619-1G (or -2); Side 2: YEX 620-1G (or -2; -3).

Philips contract pressing. The label has outer convex edging 6 mm wide. And the matrix numbers are characteristic for Phillips Records: Side 1: PCS 7016 YEX 619 A//2; Side 2: PCS 7016 YEX 620 B//3.

Matrix numbers: Side 1: YEX 619-3; Side 2: YEX 620-4.

8. Eighth pressing, July 1983. The budget Fame label (another EMI subsidiary which released vinyl as budget items between 1983 and 1994) issued just one actual Beatles title, the “A Collection of Beatles Oldies” (FA 4130811). This appeared on vinyl in July 1983. The front cover is distinguished only by a small “Fame” logo written diagonally across the top right-hand corner of the LP. The rear cover is also the same as the original Parlophone one (but with “Fame” logo at the bottom), and the LP came out with a Fame label. Matrix numbers: Side 1: YEX 619-5-1-1; Side 2: YEX 620-7-1-1.

Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, Parlophone, PMC 7027.

Published July 16th, 2011

Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, Parlophone, PMC 7027, June 01,1967, mono. Garrod & Lofthouse Ltd. laminated flipback gatefold inside flipback sleeve with “mono” PMC 7027 number on back side. With dark green cut-outs insert and original psychedelic red inner sleeve. There are two versions of the cover, one with “wide” spine and a more common version with “thin” spine.

“Fourth Proof” sleeve.

This very very rare unique sleeve! The “Fourth Proof” sleeve represents the earliest possible pressing of the Sgt Pepper cover. The Fourth Proof was the final version of the various “prototypes” that were explored by the Beatles when the cover was being designed. The cover (and text) was approved by the Beatles and an initial very small test run was undertaken to make sure everything looked OK. This small test run is characterised by the inverted “Fourth Proof“ text in the top right hand corner of the inner gatefold just above George Harrison’s head. This is therefore the earliest possible “prototype” (test pressing) cover. Same fold-back have can printed text “AR D 1321″ which was probably the reference number for the prototype text that was used.

Dark green cut-outs insert and psychedelic red inner sleeve:

1. First pressing. June 01,1967. Black label with yellow logo and silver print. “The Gramophone Co. Ltd” printed at the start perimeter print and “Sold in U.K.” text. With or without KT tax code on the label. Matrix numbers: Side 1: XEX 637-1; Side 2: XEX 638-1.

2. Second pressing 1968. Second pressing has the similar labels, gatefold sleeve and dark green cut-outs insert as the first pressing, but with standard EMI plain white inner sleeve.

When label printing plates were changed as they wore out, it appears one set of plates were mistakenly altered and the song “A Day In The Life” on the side 2 label was omitted from the tracklist.

Variant A:

4 Sgt 014 Sgt. 02

Variant B: The same labels design, but with an misprint – extra dot in “IN.U.K.” on the side 1. Dated to second half of 1968.

3. Third pressing, summer 1969 until November 1969. Garrod & Lofthouse Ltd. laminated flipback gatefold inside flipback sleeve with “mono” PMC 7027 number on back side. Black label with yellow logo and silver print. “The Gramophone Co. Ltd” printed at the start perimeter print. Plaine white or sepia “LP advertising“ inner sleeve. Without tax code. Matrix numbers: Side 1: XEX 637-1; Side 2: XEX 638-1.

4. Fourth pressing, November 1969 until 1970. Black label with one black-white EMI logo and silver print. “The Gramophone Co. Ltd” printed at the start perimeter print and “Made In GT. Britain” lower text. Garrod & Lofthouse Ltd. laminated flipback gatefold inside flipback sleeve with “mono” PMC 7027 number on back side. With cut-outs insert and sepia or black & white “LP advertising” inner sleeve. Matrix numbers: Side 1: XEX 637-1; Side 2: XEX 638-1.

Mispressing, 1969. Mono label with Stereo Matrix. With “mono” outer sleeve. Matrix numbers: Side One: YEX 637-1, Side Two: YEX 638-2. Plays Stereo!

5. Fifth pressing, summer 1981 until August 1982. Black label with yellow Parlophone logo and silver print. “ALL RIGHTS OF THE PRODUCER” printed at the start perimeter print. Importantly, around the 7 o’clock position in the rimtext the wording is: “UNAUTHORISED PUBLIC PERFORMANCE, BROADCASTING, COPYING AND HIRING”. “MANUFACTURED IN THE UK BY EMI RECORDS LIMITED” text at the end of the perimeter print. Unlaminated gatefold outer sleeve. With cut-outs insert. White paper standard EMI inner sleeve. Matrix numbers: Side 1: XEX 637-1; Side 2: XEX 638-1.

Just confirmed mispress with mono matrix number XEX 637-1 on the side 1 and stereo matrix number YEX 638-6-1-1- on the side 2.

6. Sixth pressing, Remastered, Parlophone 5099963380514, released September 8, 2014. The album was reissued on 180g vinyl, prepared from the original analogue mono master tapes.
